How it came to be
An open mouth, drawn as the opening itself and not the lips. The brush squared it off.
How it is used
- 'Mouth', and by extension an opening or entrance - 门口 (ménkǒu) doorway, 路口 (lùkǒu) intersection, 出口 (chūkǒu) exit, 入口 (rùkǒu) entrance.
- Also the measure word for people in a household - 一家五口 (yì jiā wǔ kǒu) a family of five; hence 人口 (rénkǒu) population.
- 口味 (kǒuwèi) means one's taste/flavor preference; 口语 (kǒuyǔ) spoken language.
