How it came to be
A right hand with a mouth under it. The hand alone was unclear once the script had several hands, so the mouth was added as a marker, and the pair now means the side.
How it is used
- "Right" - 右边 (yòubian) the right side, 右手 (yòushǒu) right hand. Opposite of 左 (zuǒ), 左手 (zuǒshǒu) left hand.
- In 左右 (zuǒyòu) it forms the everyday "about/approximately" - 十个左右 (shí gè zuǒyòu) ten or so.
