- Une limite, l'extension maximale permise - 超过限度 (chāoguò xiàndù) dépasser la limite, 最大限度 (zuìdà xiàndù) au maximum.
- Le plafond, le seuil d'une chose ; 最大限度地 fonctionne adverbialement, « au plus haut point ».
- À opposer à 限制 (xiànzhì, restreindre, une action) : 限度 est la borne elle-même.
