How it is used
- Attributive word meaning "online", always placed before a noun: 线上课程 (xiànshàng kèchéng) - online courses.
- Pairs with its opposite 线下 (xiànxià, offline) as a fixed business/media pair, e.g. O2O 线上线下结合 - 线下活动 (xiànxià huódòng) an in-person event.
- More formal and business-flavored than casual 网上 (wǎngshàng, on the internet) - you'd say 网上买东西 in daily chat but 线上销售 in a report.
- Cannot be used as a verb; you don't say 我线上了, only 在线上 or as a modifier.
