How it came to be
A pail with a handle over it and bands round the body, seen from the side. Some read it as a tablet for telling fortunes. Either way, a thing kept to be used.
How it is used
- "To use" - 用筷子 (yòng kuàizi) use chopsticks; also introduces the instrument: 用中文说 (yòng Zhōngwén shuō) say it in Chinese.
- 不用 (búyòng) = "no need to", the standard way to wave off thanks or an offer: 不用谢 (búyòng xiè) don't mention it, 不用了 (búyòng le) no thanks.
- 有用 (yǒuyòng) useful, 使用 (shǐyòng) to use (more formal), 用来 (yònglái) used for (doing): 这个用来切菜 (zhège yònglái qiē cài) this is for chopping vegetables.
