How it came to be

A hand with a piece of meat held in it. To have something was to have it in the hand, and meat was the thing worth drawing: the hand is at the top left.

How it is used

  • Both have and there is/are - 我有 (wǒ yǒu) I have, 有人 (yǒu rén) there's someone here.
  • Its only negation is 没有 (méiyǒu), never 不有 - the one common verb 不 cannot negate.
  • In pairs it softens to some - 有的…有的… (yǒude…yǒude… some…others…).
