The Gushi story

At the airport goodbye, salty tears run down the mother's cheeks, and her heart is so full she can feel it beating.

How it came to be

A blade held over a mouth with everybody under it, over a heart. All of it felt at once rather than a part: the difference between being moved and merely noticing.

How it is used

  • To feel / sense, and a bound morpheme for '-feeling/sense' - 感到高兴 (gǎndào gāoxìng) feel happy, 责任感 (zérèngǎn) a sense of responsibility.
  • Builds emotional/perception words: 感觉 (gǎnjué) feeling, 感动 (gǎndòng) be moved, 感谢 (gǎnxiè) thank.
  • 感兴趣 (gǎn xìngqù) 'be interested' takes 对: 对历史感兴趣 (duì lìshǐ gǎn xìngqù) interested in history. Note 感冒 (gǎnmào) means catch a cold, not literally 'feel'.
