How it came to be
The full form is a pair of wings over white: a young bird trying its wings again and again. The simple form is one of those wings, kept on its own.
How it is used
- 'Practice / study repeatedly' - 学习 (xuéxí) study, 练习 (liànxí) practice, 复习 (fùxí) review, 预习 (yùxí) preview a lesson.
- It also means an ingrained habit or custom: 习惯 (xíguàn) habit, 习俗 (xísú) custom.
- Rarely stands alone; it's the doing-it-over-and-over half of these compounds.
