How it is used
- Strong intensifier 'extremely' - 非常好 (fēicháng hǎo) excellent, one step above 很 (hěn, very).
- Neutral in register, fine in speech and writing; near 十分 (shífēn) but plainer than it.
- Its literal 'not ordinary' also survives in 非常时期 (extraordinary times).
