How it is used
- Two jobs: (1) adverb 'especially/particularly' - 特别好吃 (tèbié hǎochī) especially tasty; (2) adjective 'special/unusual' - 一个特别的日子 (yí gè tèbié de rìzi) a special day.
- As an intensifier it rivals 非常 (fēicháng, very) but feels more colloquial and emphatic.
- 特别是 (tèbié shì) means 'especially, particularly' when singling out an example.
