How it is used
- Of one's own free will, voluntary - 自愿参加 (zìyuàn cānjiā) to take part voluntarily.
- Adverb/adjective stressing no coercion; opposite of 被迫 (bèipò, forced) - 被迫离开 (bèipò líkāi) be forced to leave.
- Note 志愿 (zhìyuàn) is 'volunteer (as aspiration/service)' e.g. 志愿者; 自愿 just marks the act as willing.
