How it is used

  • To remind/prompt/hint, or a tip/notice - 温馨提示 (wēnxīn tíshì) a friendly reminder, 给点提示 (gěi diǎn tíshì) give a hint.
  • Both verb and noun; gently points something out or jogs memory, without the authority of 指示 (zhǐshì, instructions/orders).
  • Very common on signs and interfaces (提示音 prompt tone). Contrast 提醒 (tíxǐng), the everyday verb 'remind'.

  • 我会给你些提示。 Wǒhuì gěi nǐ xiē tíshì.I'll give you a little tip.
  • 你可以给我一个提示吗? Nǐ kěyǐ gěi wǒ yígè tíshì ma?Would you give me a hint?
  • 电话运营商提示来电人等候接通。 Diànhuà yùnyíngshāng tíshì láidiàn rén děnghòu jiētōng.The telephone operator asked the caller to hold on until a connection was made.
