及格 jígé to pass an exam or a test
to pass an exam or a test; to meet a minimum standard
How to remember 及格: 及 reach + 格 form = to pass an exam or a test.
Characters
How it is used
- A fused verb-object pair used intransitively: 考试及格了 (kǎoshì jígé le) - passed the exam. You can't attach an object directly after it.
- 不及格 (bù jígé), to fail, is at least as common as the positive form - 这次数学不及格 (this time I failed math).
- Different from 通过 (tōngguò), the general word for passing/getting through something (an exam, a proposal, a checkpoint) - 及格 specifically means meeting the minimum score, usually 60%.
Example sentences
- 我不想不及格。 Wǒ bùxiǎng bùjígé.I don't want to fail my exams.
