How it came to be
A hand closing on the heel of somebody walking in front, catching them up. The old dictionary explains it as to overtake.
How it is used
- To reach/be in time, and "and" (formal). 来得及 (láidejí) there's still time / 来不及 (láibují) too late to.
- 及时 (jíshí) = timely/promptly: 及时处理 (jíshí chǔlǐ) handle it in time.
- 以及 (yǐjí) = and/as well as, a formal connector for listing: A、B 以及 C. 涉及 (shèjí) = involve/touch on.
