How it is used
- Two main jobs: 'by means of / through (a method)' - 通过努力实现目标 (tōngguò nǔlì shíxiàn mùbiāo) reach the goal through effort; and 'to pass' - 通过考试 (tōngguò kǎoshì) pass an exam, 通过审批 (tōngguò shěnpī) get approved.
- As 'via', it's more formal than 用/靠; it foregrounds the means or channel.
- Also literal 'pass through' a place: 通过隧道 (tōngguò suìdào) go through the tunnel.
