How it is used
- A PhD / doctoral degree or its holder - 读博士 (dú bóshì) to do a PhD; 张博士 (Zhāng bóshì) Dr. Zhang.
- Distinct from 医生/大夫 (a medical doctor): as a title 博士 marks the academic doctorate. A medical doctor is not called 博士 by patients.
- Degree ladder: 学士 (xuéshì) bachelor's, 硕士 (shuòshì) master's, 博士 (bóshì) doctorate.
