How it came to be
A broad axe blade standing on its handle, blade down, the same weapon the king block is drawn from. It marked the man allowed to carry one, a rank long before it meant a scholar.
How it is used
- Marks a person of standing or qualification - 博士 (bóshì) PhD, 护士 (hùshi) nurse, 女士 (nǚshì) madam / Ms.
- Also soldier / warrior - 士兵 (shìbīng) soldier, 士气 (shìqì) morale.
