- An impact or shock, and to pound against - 海浪冲击着礁石 (hǎi làng chōngjī zhe jiāoshí) the waves batter the rocks.
- Very common figuratively for a jolt to a system: 受到冲击 (shòudào chōngjī) be hit hard; 冲击经济 (chōngjī jīngjì) shake up the economy.
