- To grasp the basics of a subject, or an introduction to it - 学了三个月才入门 (xuéle sān ge yuè cái rùmén) it took three months just to get the basics.
- As an attributive it means entry-level/beginner: 入门课程 (rùmén kèchéng) intro course; 入门教程 (rùmén jiàochéng) beginner's tutorial.
- Literally 'enter the door' - crossing the threshold from total novice to competent beginner.
