How it came to be
The full form is a pair of doors, each on its own post. Simplified, one door is left under the top beam, with the hinge swing in the first stroke.
How it is used
- "Door/gate" - 开门 (kāimén) open the door, 门口 (ménkǒu) doorway, 出门 (chūmén) go out (leave home).
- Extends to a "field/branch" - 部门 (bùmén) department, 专门 (zhuānmén) specialized. Also a measure word for subjects/courses - 一门课 (yì mén kè) a course.
