How it is used
- Different / not the same - 不同的意见 (bùtóng de yìjiàn) differing opinions, 完全不同 (wánquán bùtóng) completely different.
- More formal and often attributive than 不一样 (bùyíyàng), the spoken equivalent. Also a noun: 有很大不同 (yǒu hěn dà bùtóng) there's a big difference. Pairs with 跟/与…不同 (be different from…).
