禾 hé grain
grain; rice; plant
How it came to be
A grain plant with its head bent over: a tree with one stroke drooping off the top. A ripe ear is heavy and hangs; an unripe one stands up.
How it is used
- Standing grain / rice plants - 禾苗 (hémiáo) grain seedlings, 禾田 (hétián) rice fields.
- Mostly literary/agricultural. 锄禾日当午 (chú hé rì dāng wǔ), from a famous poem, evokes farmers toiling in the noon sun. Also a common character radical.
