How it came to be

A fur coat with the hairs drawn sticking out all round the edges. It was the word for a fur coat, borrowed for asking so early that the coat had to get its own character.

How it is used

  • To seek or request earnestly - 请求 (qǐngqiú) to request, 求助 (qiúzhù) to ask for help.
  • 要求 (yāoqiú) is to demand/require (also the noun 'requirement'), firmer than a polite 请求.
  • 追求 (zhuīqiú) is to pursue (a goal, or romantically); 寻求 (xúnqiú) is to seek (formal).
  • 需求 (xūqiú) = demand/need in economic contexts; 供求关系 (gōngqiú guānxì) supply and demand.
