How it came to be

It looks like the sun and is not. In the risk character the top is a cap drawn as a band with the lining marked inside, set over an eye: pulled down over the face.

How it is used

  • Means 'sun' and 'day'. As 'day' it's the more formal/written counterpart of 天 (tiān): 生日 (shēngrì) birthday, 节日 (jiérì) festival, 工作日 (gōngzuòrì) workday.
  • In dates 日 is the written form (五月一日) while 号 (hào) is spoken (五月一号).
  • 日常 (rìcháng) means everyday/routine; 日记 (rìjì) is a diary.
