How it came to be
A walled town with a foot drawn coming back down under it: the same road walked a second time, in the other direction. Going and returning is one word, so this also means to repeat.
How it is used
- Two jobs: "again/repeat" and "reply/restore." 复习 (fùxí) to review, 重复 (chóngfù) to repeat, 反复 (fǎnfù) over and over.
- 回复 (huífù) = to reply (to a message/email) - distinct from 恢复 (huīfù) to recover/restore. Same 复, watch the pairing.
- 复杂 (fùzá) complicated is the everyday high-frequency word; 复制 (fùzhì) copy/duplicate is what you do to files.
