How it came to be

A belt seen from the front: the tassels hanging off the top rail, the band itself, and the cloth falling below it. Everything in the drawing hangs, so the word is also to carry.

How it is used

  • To carry/bring along - 带钱 (dài qián) bring money, 带孩子 (dài háizi) look after/mind kids, 带路 (dài lù) lead the way. Compares with 拿 (ná, physically hold) and 戴 (dài, wear accessories) - don't confuse 带 with 戴.
  • As a noun, a belt/strap/band - 皮带 (pídài) belt, 安全带 (ānquándài) seatbelt, 领带 (lǐngdài) necktie, 胶带 (jiāodài) tape.
  • Extended 'zone/region' - 热带 (rèdài) the tropics, 一带 (yídài) the area around: 这一带 (zhè yídài) this vicinity.
  • 带领 (dàilǐng) / 带动 (dàidòng) = to lead / to drive forward (a team, growth).
