How it is used
- A formal 'to carry out / conduct' that takes a two-syllable activity noun as object - 进行调查 (jìnxíng diàochá) conduct an investigation; 进行讨论 (jìnxíng tǎolùn) hold a discussion.
- It grammaticalizes an activity as ongoing/formal; you'd rarely say it for everyday actions (not 进行吃饭).
- Written/official register, common in news and business. Also 正在进行 (zhèngzài jìnxíng) 'in progress'.
