How it is used
- To lag / fall behind, or 'backward, underdeveloped' - 技术落后 (jìshù luòhòu) technologically backward.
- Both verb (落后于别人 fall behind others) and adjective (落后地区 backward region); opposite of 先进 (xiānjìn, advanced) - 先进技术 (xiānjìn jìshù) advanced technology.
- In sports, 落后 means trailing in score: 落后两分 (luòhòu liǎng fēn) down by two points.
