How it is used
- Stirred up / worked up emotionally - can be joy, anger, or agitation - 激动得说不出话 (jīdòng de shuō bù chū huà) too moved to speak; 别太激动 (bié tài jīdòng) don't get so worked up.
- Contrast 兴奋 (xīngfèn, excited, always upbeat): 激动 is intense emotion that can also be negative or overwhelming.
- Often physical: trembling, tears, a racing heart from strong feeling.
