- School/term starts - 九月一号开学 (jiǔ yuè yī hào kāixué) the term begins on Sept 1st.
- Verb-object compound, so it splits and takes no object: 开学了 (kāixué le) school's started.
- The opposite bookend is 放假 (fàngjià, start of a holiday/break) - 学校放假 (xuéxiào fàngjià) school is on holiday.
