How it is used
- As an attributive adjective it means "the same": 同样的问题 (tóngyàng de wèntí) the same problem.
- As a sentence adverb it links two clauses meaning "likewise, similarly": 他很努力,同样也很聪明 (tā hěn nǔlì, tóngyàng yě hěn cōngming) - he's hardworking, and likewise smart.
- Compare 一样 yíyàng, which is predicative and compares two named things directly (A跟B一样); 同样 is more of a written connector describing a shared quality without naming both sides explicitly.
