How it is used
- 'let alone / much less', or 'besides, what's more' - 大人都搬不动,何况孩子 (dàrén dōu bān bú dòng, hékuàng háizi) even adults can't move it, let alone a child.
- Often 更何况 (gèng hékuàng) for the 'let alone' escalation. Introduces a stronger case that follows a fortiori.
- Also adds a further reason: 天黑了,何况又下雨 (it's dark, and besides it's raining).
