How it is used
- To alternate / take turns replacing each other - 昼夜交替 (zhòuyè jiāotì) day and night alternating, 新老交替 (xīn-lǎo jiāotì) the changeover of old and new generations.
- Stresses regular back-and-forth succession, one giving way to the other; adverbially 交替进行 (jiāotì jìnxíng) done in turns.
- Different from 交换 (jiāohuàn, to swap between two parties); 交替 is sequential taking-turns.
