How it came to be
On the oldest carvings this is a phoenix, drawn with the crest and the long tail. Wind was what the great bird made when it moved, so the bird was the word.
How it is used
- Wind - pairs with 刮 as 刮风 (guā fēng) it's windy; 台风 (táifēng) is a typhoon (the input gloss 'stage presence' is a rare secondary sense).
- Extends to 'style/manner/atmosphere' - 风格 (fēnggé) style, 风俗 (fēngsú) custom, 作风 (zuòfēng) way of doing things.
- 风景 (fēngjǐng) scenery and 风光 (fēngguāng) scenic views cover the travel/postcard sense.
