How it came to be
A ram's head seen from the front: the horns curling out at the top, the ears below them, and the nose line straight down the middle.
How it is used
- Covers both sheep and goat - 绵羊 (miányáng) sheep, 山羊 (shānyáng) goat; measure word 只 (yì zhī yáng).
- 羊肉 (yángròu) = mutton/lamb, a staple in northern and Muslim Chinese cuisine (羊肉串 yángròuchuàn lamb skewers).
- 亡羊补牢 (wángyáng-bǔláo) = mend the fold after losing sheep - better late than never.
