How it came to be
A person seen from the front with the arms out, drawn on a ground line. The line is what makes it standing; without it the figure is just big.
How it is used
- Bound, fairly formal morpheme for "to stand" or "to establish" - as a free verb for physically standing, 站 (zhàn) is the everyday word; 站立 (zhànlì) is the more formal written equivalent.
- 立刻/立即 (lìkè/lìjí) "immediately" are common written adverbs, a notch more formal than spoken 马上 (mǎshàng).
- 建立 (jiànlì) "to establish/set up" and 独立 (dúlì) "independent" are core everyday compounds (建立关系 "establish a relationship", 经济独立 "financially independent").
- 立正 (lìzhèng) "Attention!" is the military/drill command, a fossilized specialized use.
