How it came to be
A millet plant, with the grains hanging off the stem. The full form sets it in a crossroads: a way of doing things, laid out like a route through a town.
How it is used
- Bound "art/technique/method" - 技术 (jìshù) technology, 艺术 (yìshù) art, 武术 (wǔshù) martial arts.
- Crucially 手术 (shǒushù) = surgery/operation: 做手术 (zuò shǒushù) have an operation.
- Compared to 技 (jì, practical skill), 术 leans toward a systematic method or art - 战术 (zhànshù) tactics, 美术 (měishù) fine art.
