How it came to be
A cloth hung over a rail: the rail across the top, the hanging stroke through it, and the two ends coming down either side.
How it is used
- A bound morpheme for a piece of cloth you use - 毛巾 (máojīn) towel, 纸巾 (zhǐjīn) tissue/paper towel, 围巾 (wéijīn) scarf.
- Rarely stands alone today; recognize it by the 巾 radical, which marks cloth items.
- The measure word is 条 (tiáo) for towels and scarves: 一条毛巾 (yì tiáo máojīn) a towel.
