尚 shàng esteem
esteem; yet; even
How it came to be
Two strokes dividing over a window in a wall: light coming in and spreading out. The old dictionary reads it as what is raised up and looked towards.
How it is used
- Two jobs. As an adverb (formal/written) = 'still, yet': 尚未完成 (shàng wèi wánchéng) not yet finished, 尚且 (shàngqiě) even.
- As a morpheme = 'to esteem/value': 崇尚 (chóngshàng) advocate, 时尚 (shíshàng) fashion, 高尚 (gāoshàng) noble.
- 和尚 (héshang) = a Buddhist monk (fixed word). 礼尚往来 (lǐshàng-wǎnglái) = courtesy calls for reciprocity.
