夸 kuā extravagant

extravagant; luxurious; to exaggerate; to praise

  • HSK 6
  • 6 strokes

How it came to be

A person standing over the 'to lose' block, breath going out and bending. Somebody full of air, talking themselves up, with the breath drawn coming out beneath them.

How it is used

  • To praise or to overstate - 夸奖 (kuājiǎng) / 夸 (kuā) to praise: 老师夸我 (lǎoshī kuā wǒ) the teacher praised me.
  • Also 'to exaggerate': 夸张 (kuāzhāng) exaggerate/exaggerated, 夸大 (kuādà) overstate.
  • Note the two flavors coexist: 夸 alone usually = compliment, but 夸夸其谈 (kuākuā-qítán) = to talk big/boastfully.
