华 huá flowery
flowery; Chinese
How it came to be
A plant with rows of blooms hanging off the stem, heavy with them, in the full form. It is a flowering tree seen from far away: all blossom and no detail.
How it is used
- Bound root with two senses: "Chinese (ethnic/national)" and "splendid, flowery".
- Ethnic sense: 华人 huárén "ethnic Chinese person" (general term), 华侨 huáqiáo "overseas Chinese national (still holds Chinese citizenship)", 华裔 huáyì "foreign-born person of Chinese descent" - the three differ by citizenship/birthplace, a common point of confusion.
- Splendid sense: 才华 cáihuá "talent", 华丽 huálì "gorgeous, ornate" (of clothing, language), 升华 shēnghuá "to sublimate", used figuratively for elevating an idea or emotion.
