串 chuàn string

string; to string together; bunch

  • HSK 6
  • 7 strokes

How it came to be

Two objects with one line through them, driven straight down. It is not a cord tying things together. The line goes through, which is why the word means a skewer as much as a string.

How it is used

  • A measure word and verb for things strung together - 一串葡萄 (yí chuàn pútao) a bunch of grapes; 一串钥匙 (yí chuàn yàoshi) a string of keys.
  • As a verb, 'to string/link' or 'to go from place to place': 串门 (chuànmén) drop in on neighbors; 一连串 (yìliánchuàn) a whole series of.
