How it came to be
A plain cross: one stroke cut straight through another. The shape is the cutting, and the cut character still carries it; the number borrowed the drawing early and kept it.
How it is used
- Seven - 七个 (qī ge) seven of, 七月 (qīyuè) July.
- Idioms often pair it with 八 to signal messiness: 乱七八糟 (luànqībāzāo) in a total mess, 七嘴八舌 (qīzuǐ-bāshé) everyone talking at once.
