- Two linked senses: a lesson learned the hard way - 吸取教训 (xīqǔ jiàoxùn) draw a lesson; and to give someone a scolding - 教训了他一顿 (jiàoxùn le tā yí dùn) gave him a talking-to.
- As a noun it's a bitter lesson from failure; as a verb it's a stern reproach/dressing-down.
- Note the reading jiàoxùn. Measure words 番/顿 for the scolding sense.
