- In a question, an emphatic 'on earth / after all', demanding a definite answer: 你到底想干什么? (nǐ dàodǐ xiǎng gàn shénme?) what on earth do you want?
- In a statement, 'finally / in the end': 问题到底解决了 (wèntí dàodǐ jiějué le) the problem was finally solved.
- Literally 'reach the bottom', so also 坚持到底 (jiānchí dàodǐ) = hold out to the very end.
