源How it came to be

The outline of a face with a single eye drawn inside it. One eye is enough because the outline is the point: this is the front of a head rather than what is on it.

用用法

• Face / side / surface - 前面 (qiánmiàn) in front, 里面 (lǐmiàn) inside, 对面 (duìmiàn) opposite; a locality suffix on direction words.
• Also noodles / flour (traditionally a separate character) - 面条 (miàntiáo) noodles, 面包 (miànbāo) bread.
