How it came to be
A kneeling figure in a headdress, with a hand holding a stick behind it. Somebody being made to mind their manners: the respect here is forced, not felt.
用法
- 尊敬 zūnjìng "to respect" (elders, teachers, authority) is the most common word built on 敬.
- 敬酒 jìngjiǔ "to offer a toast/propose a drink to someone" is important banquet etiquette in Chinese social settings.
- 敬业 jìngyè "dedicated to one's work, professional" is a common compliment in workplace contexts.
- Conveys reverence or deference, distinct from plain politeness like 请 qǐng.
