How it came to be
A pole weapon set beside a walled space with a line under it: a patch of ground with a weapon standing over it. It was the word for a territory, borrowed for perhaps.

- "Or" in statements and lists - 茶或者咖啡 (chá huòzhě kāfēi) tea or coffee; fuller 或者 (huòzhě) / 或是 (huòshì).
- Key trap: in a QUESTION offering choices, use 还是 (háishi), not 或者 - 你喝茶还是咖啡？(nǐ hē chá háishi kāfēi) tea or coffee? Never 或者 there.
- 或许 (huòxǔ) = perhaps/maybe (a hedge, like 也许); 或多或少 (huòduō-huòshǎo) = more or less.
