How it is used
- To exclude - not counting a specified item - 每天营业，周日除外 (měitiān yíngyè, zhōurì chúwài) open daily, Sundays excepted.
- Typically placed after the excluded item, at the end of a clause; it's the 'X excepted' pattern.
- Contrast 除了 (chúle, 'besides/except', placed before the item) - 除外 trails behind and means 'is left out'.
