酒店 jiǔdiàn hotel
hotel; restaurant; wine shop (old use)
How to remember 酒店: 酒 liquor + 店 shop = hotel.
Characters
How it is used
- In modern mainland use this is a full-service HOTEL, not a wine shop - 五星级酒店 (wǔ xīng jí jiǔdiàn) a five-star hotel.
- Note the false friend: the characters read 'wine shop', but 酒店 rarely means a bar today; a hotel is also 宾馆 (bīnguǎn), which sounds slightly more old-fashioned.
- For an actual liquor store you'd say 酒行 or 卖酒的 - don't reach for 酒店.
